David Duchovny has spent the last decade steadily building a body of work as a songwriter and recording artist, working with a small and dedicated group of musicians and friends. On Prince of Pieces, his fourth album, that dedication and those longtime relationships come together to create his most cohesive, collaborative and intimate work yet.
Prince of Pieces follows Highwater, 2017’s Every Third Thought and 2021’s Gestureland. Duchovny’s prior work has earned critical acclaim; Allmusic called his music “eloquent, alt-rock-kissed country-folk in the vein of Wilco and the Wallflowers,” while the Boston Globe praised Duchovny’s voice, noting “he sings with a parched resonance and just a hint of rasp. He is rather heartfelt.”
“The arrangements of the songs have always been in service of either the groove or the emotion,” says Duchovny. “It’s case by case. I like to try to find sounds that fill the space above the melody, like horns or bells or harmonies as well as trying to find or inspire cool beats.”
