Often pigeonholed by society as black metal, the band finds the term limiting and counts the metal subgenre as their main inspiration. Their ever-evolving sound incorporates elements of black metal, shoegaze, post-rock, and even accessible – but musically challenging – arena rock, as evidenced by albums like 2013’s Sunbather and the more punchy and dynamic New Bermuda. 2018’s Ordinary Corrupt Human Love wedged some more subtle, experimental and cinematic songwriting into their established black metal roots. Their fifth studio album, 2021’s Infinite Granite, was their least metal-influenced record yet, leaning more towards dream pop, ambient and alternative rock.
Deafheaven’s monolithic second album Sunbather was not only a huge success in 2013, but it also caused a radical shift in heavy music culture, an acceptance of the genre by previous outsiders, and a groundbreaking sound that had not yet been heard outside of educated circles. It was a revue that introduced a changing of the guard in metal, featured phenomenal reviews across all disciplines, and broke the template used by uptight indie types and faux musical dilettantes who wanted to maintain the status quo.
